| Antidepressants: getting a grip on depression |
Everybody feels down now and again. According to estimates, ten percent of American grownups suffer from a depressive disorder. This type of mental disorders includes major depression. Symptoms of major depression are the following: - No interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy - Feeling sad or empty - Crying easily for "no reason" - Feeling slowed down or feeling unsatisfied and unable to sit still - Losing or putting on weight - Thoughts about death or suicide - Trouble thinking, recalling things or concentrating - Trouble making everyday decisions - Trouble sleeping, in particular in the early morning or waiting to sleep all the time - Feeling worn out all the time Depression is considered to be related to chemical imbalances in the brain that makes it hard for cells to communicate with one another. Depression can be triggered by stressful times, such as the death of someone you love, a divorce or downsizing. But it can also come out of the blue. Certain medicines, alcohol and drug addiction, or chronic diseases, such as diabetes or coronary problems, can trigger depression. Depression can be treated with medicines, or special form of counseling called psychotherapy, or with both. Antidepressants are medicines used to help people who suffer from depression. Most people with depression get better with treatment that includes these medications. Antidepressants (Citalopram 20mg/40mg, ...) work by raising the activity of certain chemicals in our brain known as neurotransmitters. Antidepressants help make these natural chemicals more available to the brain. Ordinarily, antidepressants are taken leastways for six to twelve months. They can better your mood, sleep, appetite and concentration. It may take a few weeks to see the results. There are several types of antidepressants, i.e. Elavil/Amitriptyline and Paxil/Paroxetine. You and your physician may have to try several before finding what medication works best for you. At times drugs cause unexpected side effects. They may vary from patient to patient and from medicine to medicine. For example, when you first begin your antidepressant you may feel tired, have trouble sleeping or feel sick to your stomach. The side effects commonly disappear after a while. However, even after 12 months of treatment, there is still about a 10% chance of depression returning as soon as treatment is finished. Some people take antidepressants for several years. <!--##-->
